MOBILE — Andalusia’s varsity girls’ basketball season came to a screeching end Friday at the Class 4A South Regional Tournament, as UMS-Wright held on late in the fourth period to win 50-35.

AHS girls coach Bennie Shellhouse said the loss was the “worst” this year.

“That’s probably the worst ballgame we’ve had this year,” Shellhouse said. “We didn’t play real hard, and didn’t play real well.”

Andalusia finished the game 0-of-17 from the perimeter, and 15-of-61 from the field.

In the last 3 minutes, 59 seconds in the contest, UMS-Wright outscored Andalusia 11-0 to earn the 15-point win. Andalusia only scored five points in the last period of the contest.

UMS-Wright was 6-of-14 from the perimeter, and out-rebounded Andalusia 42-28.

UMS coach Terry Canova said shooting 5-of-8 from the three-point range was a good thing to see.

“I’ll take that 5-of-8 anytime,” Canova said. “That’s our make up. We’ve got several kids that shoot the threes really well.

“Charlotte Galloway, she made some huge ones,” he said. “When she comes in and makes a couple big threes like that, that was tremendous for us.”

Chelan Blow led UMS-Wright with 14 points, and Galloway came in a close second with 12 points.

Trailing 10-9 after the first period, UMS-Wright outscored Andalusia 8-7 in the second period to even the game up at 17 points each.

Both teams scored 13 points in the third period before UMS-Wright outscored Andalusia 20-5 in the fourth for the win.

Alexis Horton led Andalusia with 21 points. Tylesha Malcolm had seven points.

Shellhouse said after the game that the loss may also have been because of the team’s approach to the game.

“I think sometimes when you get in games like this, you look too much at your next opponents instead of the one in front of you,” Shellhouse said. “I think that’s how we approached this game, thinking our athleticism would overpower them.

“Their coach is a great coach,” he said. “He does a good job teaching fundamentals. They were much more fundamentally sound (Friday) than we were.”

Andalusia ended its season 25-5, and walk away with a record of winning 20 games straight.
