Red Level officials told county commissioners Monday they are worried a description of a Department of Transportation project funded with stimulus money will keep the town from getting an access road to its new Dollar General store.

Mayor Mike Purnell said he and fellow council members were a “little nervous” about the road, which will connect downtown Red Level to the store’s parking lot. The county commission is administering the $160,000 DOT award, which was awarded in August.

Documentation from the federal government’s Web site shows Red Level was the recipient of $265,000 DOT award for a project that involves the widening and repaving of County Road 98 to U.S. Hwy. 84 to County Road 49.

Purnell said the latitude and longitude coordinates place the project in Red Level; however, the site shows the project is actually under way in Sanford.

“We understand it’s probably a clerical error, but it makes us a little nervous,” he said. “We hope to see some action. We’re here to see what we need to do to get this road built.”

County engineer Darren Capps said Purnell and town officials shouldn’t worry about the project description. He said road crews were moving equipment to the area later in the afternoon and could get started in the coming days.

“We plan to get started as soon as possible, but it really depends on the weather,” he said. “That’s a clay area that takes a while to dry out. Once we start, it will take two weeks to get the contractor in to lay the dirt, and then it won’t be long, but like I said, it depends on the weather.”

The commission also appointed members to the South Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA) board, including Virginia Merritt, Davy Linsey, Brenda Petty, Randy Wahl and Robert Williamson.

In other business, the commission:

• approved out-of-state travel for two sheriff’s deputies;

• declared three vehicles – a 2001 Ford F-150, a 2004 Dodge Durango and a 2004 Crown Victoria – as surplus and voted to dispose of them on govdeals.com;

• agreed at the next commission meeting to honor Coach Richard Robinson for his 700-plus victories;

• approved a one-year contract extension with no changes for inmate medical services with Southern Health Partners for $264,240.
