H.M. “Pete” Davis

H. M. “Pete” Davis, 87, of Andalusia died Mon., Feb. 28, 2011, in a Bay Minette hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., today, Thurs., March 3, at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Mary Ann Gantt officiating and Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow with full military honors by the Navy Honor Guard.

He is survived by a niece, Lynn Krudop of Andalusia, and brother-in-laws, Wayne (Mary) Simmons of Laurel Hill, Fla., Emmitt (Virginia) Simmons of Enterprise and Donald (Katherine) Simmons of Richardson, Texas.

Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. today at Foreman’s.

BETTY MARIE LAYNE

Betty Marie Layne, 78, of Andalusia and formerly of Biloxi, Miss., passed away Tues., March. 1, 2011.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will be held at Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi, Miss., on Sat., March 5.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeannette M. Kearns of Andalusia, Donna Lunsford of Asheville, N.C., and JoAnn Forehand of Vancleave, Miss.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four children, Tommy Powell, Randy Powell, Alan Layne and Michelle Layne.

THE REV. ELISHA JAMES ‘E.J.’ CUNNINGHAM

The Rev. Elisha James “E.J.” Cunningham, 74, passed away on Feb. 21, 2011.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Feb. 26, at Belleville Missionary Baptist Church in Belleville, Ala., with the Rev. Sidney C. Tucker and the Rev. Daniel T. Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was born to the late Charlie and Callie R. Cunningham on Sept. 12, 1936, in Conecuh County. He received Christ at an early age and joined Belleview Missionary Baptist Church.

He was educated in the Conecuh County public school system and graduated in 1958. After graduation, he began working to provide for his family at the Container Corporation of America (CCA) and retired in 2000 after 36 years of service.

The Rev. Cunningham was the original bass singer in the gospel group, “The Gospel Harmonizers,” that was formed in 1953.

He pastored at Beulah Baptist Church, Evergreen; Antioch Baptist Church, Andalusia; and at the Jordon Grove Baptist Church, Seawright, and was the founder and pastor of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Dozier.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife of 21 years, Lou Ann; seven children, Dorothy Carol of Boston, Thelma Jean (Juan) of Hempstead, N.Y., Marilyn Arnita (Tony) of San Antonio; Morris Sylvester (Latonda) and Wesley Ladon (Tasha), all of Montgomery, Katina of Atlanta and Gwendolyn of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Polly Mae Counts of Laurelton, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two devoted friends, the Rev. Johnny Atkins and the Rev. Daniel Taylor; a special and loyal sister-in-law, Shirley Freeney (Dot); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers.

Kirk’s Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

JIMMY BROGDEN

Jimmy Brogden, 59, of Andalusia, passed away Sun., Feb. 27, 2011, in a Dothan hospital.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Wed., March 2, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. Glenn Ward officiated, and special music was provided by Jeffrey Mitchell.

Burial followed in Stone Lake Gardens with Keahey Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Jennie Brogden; two sons and daughter-in-law,

Chuck and Casey Brogden, all of Andalusia, and Patrick Thomas of Pensacola, Fla.; daughters and son-in-law, Angie Queen and Brittany and Luke Williams, all of Andalusia; a brother and sister-in-law, Carey and Sue Brogden of Greenville; a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Ted Ferrell of Ft. Deposit; three grandchildren, Tanner James Brogden, Gavin Trent Brogden and Landrie Blair Kelley.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gerald Queen.

Serving as pallbearers were Greg Palmer, Steve Palmer, Dale Pike, Robby Weaver, David Mitchell Jr., Levon Mitchell, Luke Williams and Carey Brogden.

DARRELL JEFFCOAT

Darrell Jeffcoat, 48, of Elba, formerly of Andalusia, passed away Mon., Feb. 28, 2011, in a Dothan hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Fri., March 4, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Enterprise.

Family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Sorrells Funeral Home in Enterprise.

Burial will follow in Stone Lake Gardens with Keahey Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Vicky Jeffcoat of Elba; father, Gerrell Jeffcoat; mother, Jewel Jeffcoat, both of Enterprise, formerly of Andalusia; daughter, Jannah Jeffcoat; stepdaughter, Tina Walker, both of Andalusia; two brothers, Johnny and Tim Jeffcoat; two sisters, Gwen Jay and Sandy Gardner, all of Enterprise; stepgrandson, Caleb Walker of Andalusia; and maternal grandmother, Louvinia Thomas of Goodman, Ala.
