Several local women have committed to walk 60 miles and raise more than $2,000 each to help fight breast cancer, and those women are asking members of the local community to step up and do the same thing only on a smaller scale.

The “Sole Sisters” are asking area residents to walk 5K and contribute $25 in the second annual “Walk for a Cure” set for 9 a.m. Sat., March 19.

Participants will walk from the Beef O’Brady’s parking lot through downtown to the First Baptist Church and back in support of a breast cancer cure.

“Last year, we had about 140 walkers,” said organizer Kim Brook. “All the proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.”

Brook said those interested in participating can pre-register in Andalusia at Sun Tech or register the morning of the race.

Brook said the “Sole Sisters” will again walk in the annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day For A Cure coming up this year. Brook and Laura Taylor have committed to walk.

“We just have so many people in the area and in our families that are affected by breast cancer,” she said. “We want to help all that we can.”

Brook also said that for those who don’t want to walk the entire 3 miles, there will be transportation to pick them up.

“It’s not a race. It’s a walk to bring awareness to the city,” she said.

Those who sign up will receive a T-shirt with their name on it.

“Those who sign up the day of the race, will get a T-shirt. It just might not be that day,” she said.
