A Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., man with Covington County ties who is the prime suspect in a Friday murder turned himself in late yesterday.

Daryl Wade Mayatte, 34, was wanted in connection with the shooting of two men in a home on Country Club Drive, off County Road 393, in Walton County, Fla., said Mike Morrison, public information officer for the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Morrison said the two men were allegedly shot sometime after 3 p.m. Friday. One man died and the other was flown to a Pensacola, Fla., hospital for treatment. Walton County Sheriff’s Office investigators were still working to positively identify the victims yesterday.

Morrison confirmed Monday that Mayatte has local ties, but declined to comment on their nature “given the sensitivity of the investigation,” he said.

Mayatte is a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. He has a tattoo that reads “Big D” on one forearm.

Monday, he was still a wanted man.

“Obviously, we do consider this person dangerous,” Morrison said. “We encourage people in the community if they come into contact with him or have information about his whereabouts to contact local law enforcement.”

But Mayatte turned himself in to the D’Iberville Police Department in Harrison, County, Miss., Monday afternoon. Late in the day, he was awaiting extradition to Walton County, Fla.
