With only 42 days until this year’s Covington County Relay for Life, fundraising efforts are in full swing.

Carrie Turner, Relay for Life co-chair, said there are 25 teams signed up for this year’s event and thus far, have raised $25,000 in sponsorships, which meets the year’s sponsorship goal.

This year’s event will be held April 29 at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds. The theme is “Rockin’ Around the Clock.”

The Andalusia Department of Leisure Services is wrapping up its Boston Butt and rib sale today and pick up will be held at the Adult Activity Center.

“We sold more than 200 Boston Butts and ribs,” said Brenda Henderson, a member of the Relay team.

For those who missed out on the barbecue in Andalusia, Mizell Memorial Hospital’s team is selling smoked ribs until March 26. The ribs will be prepared by Pap-Paw’s, with pick up set for March 26. Call 334-300-7686 to order.

The fundraising events will continue Saturday, so pull out the hula hoops and get ready to swing your hips, at the Comfort Care Hospice Hula Hoop for a Cure event Saturday on the Square.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the contest begins at 1:45 p.m. There will be four age divisions beginning with a 10 and under group up to 40 and older. There will be one winner per age division. Cost is $5 per contestant.

“Hula hooping is a lost art,” said organizer Vickie Wacaster. “It represents the circle of life – The continuation of care throughout someone’s life. How neat is that to sponsor a hula hoop because we care about the whole person not just the disease. I think it’s going to be a blast.”

If hula hoping isn’t your think, how about fishing?

Fishing enthusiasts need to get bait and tackle ready for the annual Southeast Alabama Gas District fishing tournament. “Fishing for a Cure for Cancer” will be held March 26 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Point A Park. Cost is $90 per boat and $10 optional big fish per boat.

“We’re hoping to incorporate arts and crafts and yard sale items,” said Reba Gant, organizer. “Parker Photography will be on site, and we’ll have barbecue plates. We hope it will be a good fun family day.”
