They say a sound mind in a sound body is a short but full description of a happy state in this world. That’s exactly what one local woman is trying to accomplish with her new business.

Bright Beings, which opened three weeks ago, offers local vendors an opportunity to showcase their works, while using workshops to inspire the mind, body and spirit.

“Our goal is to empower women to be more independent,” said owner Taylor Gantt. “Come join us in crafting items that are sure to inspire the spirit and intrigue the mind.”

Among the items on sale are birdhouses, inspirational music, self-help books and more.

“We are looking for local vendors who are looking to sell their work,” she said. “Right now, we have about 10 local vendors, and we could use more.”

Current vendors include makers of birdhouses, pillows, handmade dolls, and more.

Gantt, who grew up in Covington County, recently returned from a six-year stay in Hawaii, where she said she learned about alternative healing therapy.

“I enjoy doing this,” she said. “I didn’t want to work for someone else, and there really isn’t a whole lot of alternative healing in Andalusia.”

For Gantt, it’s about teaching residents to do without so many materialistic things.

“I really want to educate the people on getting back to the basics,” she said. “You can really get anything you need locally. We really want to support our economy.”

Gantt said her goal is to spread the alternative healing throughout the county and create a network of alternative healers and a healing arts center.

Other services available include “Mommy and Me” workshops, intuitive readings and arts and crafts workshops.

“Come and join the fun as you work with your little one to create memories that will last a lifetime,” Gantt said. “Bring an open mind, clothes to create in and have fun with the ladies.” Gantt said there are also classes for those who want to learn homeopathy and complementary medicine.

The shop is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and is located on East Three Notch Street across the street from Winn-Dixie.
