SHS girls 10-run rival, RLS

Straughn played without mercy Thursday night, forcing the 10-run rule to beat Red Level and rival Andalusia at the sixth annual Kirsten L. Dean softball tournament at SHS.

Both games ended with the same score of 10-0, and Straughn advances as the No. 1 seed going into Saturday’s single elimination play.

Andalusia, the No. 2 seed, beat Red Level 13-2 in six innings in the second game.

Straughn 10, Andalusia 0

Paige Caraway struck out six, allowed one hit and one walk in four innings to earn the win for Straughn.

Katie Beck was 1-for-2 with one single and two RBIs; Katy Messick was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Caraway was 2-for-3 with one single, one double and one RBI; Tiffany Taylor was 1-for-2 with one single and one run; Kelli Wilcox was 1-for-3 with one run; Megan Johns was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI; and Laken Harris was 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Wiggins came in to get the save for Straughn and had one strikeout.

Andalusia’s A.C. Riley was 1-for-2 with one single for the Lady Bulldogs.

Olivia Dixon pitched five innings for Andalusia.

Sixth-ranked Straughn (11-4) scored two runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning.

Andalusia 13, Red Level 2

Andalusia scored seven runs in the sixth inning, and Abbie Young was 4-for-5 with two singles, two doubles and four RBIs in the 11-run win over Red Level.

The Lady Bulldogs scored one run each in the second and third innings, and added four in the fourth inning before the seven-run spree in the sixth.

Dixon struck out 11, allowed two runs on one hit in six innings to get the win on the mound.

Emily Terry was 3-for-5 with one double and two RBIs; Riley was 2-for-4 with two singles; Kenna Edmondson was 3-for-5 with three singles; and Megan Pugh was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Red Level’s Morgan Carpenter was 1-for-3 with one single. Hannah Colvin pitched 2.1 innings, and Courtney Douglas pitched 3.2 innings.

Red Level scored its two runs in the first inning on an error.

Straughn 10, Red Level 0

Straughn’s Payton Mitchell struck out seven and allowed one hit in five innings.

Straughn scored five runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth in the win.

Laken Harris was 4-for-4; Tiffany Taylor was 3-for-3; and Kari Biggs was 3-for-3.

SHS accounted for 13 hits against Red Level in its first game of the day.
