A South Dakota man has been indicted on federal counterfeiting charges after he allegedly tried to pass 20 fake checks drawn from several Alabama medical facilities – including Andalusia Regional Hospital.
U.S. Attorney Leura Canary’s office reported that Michael Wayne Hicks, 39, of Box Elder, S.D., is accused of counterfeiting checks on a number of nearby medical facilities as well.
The 21-count indictment against Hicks was unsealed Friday, and also alleges he had a laptop computer that was particularly suited for making the counterfeit checks.
If convicted, Hicks would face a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000 and an order of restitution.
