Local Relay for Life kicks off

Those wanting to “go long for a cure” are asked to form their Relay for Life teams and sign up to be part of this year’s football-themed event.

Carrie Thomasson, chair of the event, said there are have six teams signed up after Monday night’s kickoff meeting, and the goal is 25 teams.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising activity. During the Relay, team members take turns walking around a track, there is also a survivors’ dinner, lap and entertainment.

“We had a really good turnout,” she said. “We had a lot of new committee members. It’s great to have a lot of new faces.”

In all, nearly 35 attended the meeting.

Thomasson said the community’s help is needed to raise funds for the $110,000 goal.

The next meeting will be Nov. 8 at the County Board of Education building at 6 p.m.

Big upcoming fundraisers will be the Alabama-Auburn Iron Bowl bow sale from Nov. 12-19; Miss Relay for Life pageant Sat., Feb. 4; Sat., March 17 the Bama Burn 5K run walk; Bank night will be Mon., April 23; and Relay for Life will be held Fri., April 27.
