The U.S. Postal Service has another Covington County location on its possible hit list for closure.

The USPS has scheduled a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 7, to hear input from the public about the possible closing of Wing’s Post Office. The meeting will be held in the community’s fire department.

For the many years of the United States’ history, the post office has been a community gathering place, and it is a sad day any time a post office or any other unifying location closes.

But the USPS needs to cut costs, and is studying the possible closure of approximately 3,700 retail offices nationwide, a move that would save approximately $200 million annually.

Each community, justifiably, wants to keep its post office and Wing should be no different. But the hard, cold fact is that a county our size doesn’t need eight retail postal outlets (Andalusia, River Falls, Red Level, Wing, Gantt, Lockhart, Opp and Florala).

More interesting still is that a search from the USPS web site lists 25 post offices within a 40-mile radius of Andalusia’s 36420 zip code.

It has often been said that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. With that in mind, Wing residents should attend the November meeting and loudly voice their desire to keep this resource in their community, just as Gantt residents have before them. That might save this fight – and this resource – for a later day.
