An Andalusia man has pled guilty to using a magician’s trick to escape a sheriff’s deputy’s custody, as well as to the forgery charge that put him in the back of the patrol car in the first place.

Jonathan Kyle White was arrested in May at a home on U.S. Hwy. 29, but when the deputy handcuffed him and placed him into the patrol car, White managed to move his handcuffed hands from behind his back to the front of his body and escape. He was captured a short time later.

White, who was represented by attorney Bill Alverson, was sentenced to six years in prison on the escape charge and three years on the forgery charge. His time will run concurrently.

Also negotiating a plea deal was an Opp man accused of molesting a young boy. Jason Allen Snell, who was represented by attorney Amy Jones, pled guilty to the sexual abuse of a child under 12, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The two cases were among the 24 cases disposed of in Covington County Circuit Court in October after plea agreements were reached, District Attorney Walt Merrell said.

Of those, 71 percent resulted in prison time; 21 percent were given probation; and the final 8 percent are awaiting probation hearings. Additionally, 50 percent of the 24 cases were drug-related; 33 percent property/person/other crimes; and 17 percent child/sex abuse cases, he said.
