A 4,000 square foot sewer rehab is expected to begin in the City of Opp in the coming weeks, officials said, Monday night.

The city council approved a low bid from Nordan Contracting of Saraland for $373,845.

Other bidders included Beasley & Co. with $430,102, Blankenship Contracting with $398,854, Hilton Cooper Contracting with $409,199 and L&K Contracting with $464,249.

The project will bring a sewerage overhaul to the areas of Eighth Avenue, Rosalie and Cummings Avenue.

Project Manager Tim Ramdsen of CDG Engineers told the council that work on the project should begin at the end of November or beginning of December, and would take 90 calendar days.

“They’ll probably ask for a time stop for a few days during Christmas,” he said.

Mayor H.D. Edgar said he saw no reason why that wouldn’t be OK.

Ramsden said the bid was under budget.

The city received a no match $420,000 Community Development Block Grant from ADECA.

“That gives a flexibility if there is something in construction we don’t expect,” he said. “And sometimes these things happen.”

Edgar said this is the sixth CDBG sewerage grant the city has received in the seven years he’s been mayor.

“There is a lot of old pipe in that area,” he said. “And it needs to be fixed.”
