BEVERLEY EUGENE SMITH, JR.

Beverley Eugene Smith, Jr. – 72, died Mon., Nov. 21, at the Yalobusha County Nursing Home in Water Valley, Miss. He is survived by four children, Whitman Smith (Stacey) of Oxford, Miss.; Jay Smith (Julie) of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; Wendy Hutcheson Mosier (Kyle) of Huntsville, Ala.; Lori Hutcheson Johnson (Matt) of Brent, Ala.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Dillard Smith (Leslie) of Arlington, Texas; and two nieces.

Born in Tacoma, Wash., Bev was the son of Dr. and Mrs. (Mary Winifred) Beverley Eugene Smith and graduated Murrah High School in Jackson in 1957.  He was an Eagle Scout and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at the University of Mississippi in 1961 and 1964. In 1971, while working as the first curator at William Faulkner’s home Rowan Oak, he discovered what are now known as the Rowan Oak papers written by William Faulkner and previously unpublished.

He loved music and art, but his passion was teaching.  In 1971 he moved to Andalusia and became an instructor at LBW for a one year appointment.  He retired from that position in 1999.  At Ole Miss he was voted best graduate instructor in the English department, and was the three time teacher of the year at LBW.  In 1987 he garnered Alabama Community College Teacher of the Year Honors and was a National Teacher of the Year.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Andalusia, Ala.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to The LBW Foundation.  A memorial service and life celebration will be held in Andalusia at a later date.

LOUISE DAVIS

Louise Davis, 90, passed away Mon., Nov. 21, 2011.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., today, Wed., Nov. 23, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel with Keahey Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband of 75 years, Robert Alphus Davis of Andalusia; sons, Paul Milton (Linda Williams) Davis of Talking Rock, Ga., Verion (Kay Lynn Large) Davis and Robert Larry Davis; brothers, Rev. Wilson (Ruby) Meadows, all of Andalusia, and Joe Tom Meadows of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; sister, Oranell Harrison of Columbus, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sons, Ben Shelton Davis and Mark Allen Davis.

 

PATRICIA JEANETTE DAVIS

Patricia Jeanette Davis, 72, of Andalusia, died Sat., Nov. 19, 2011, at her residence.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., today, Wed., Nov. 23, from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Cotter and the Rev. Don Sessions officiating. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery. Visitation will be at Foreman Funeral Home two hours prior to the service.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Brian and Tina Hayes of Haines City, Fla., Mike and Vickie Carrigg of Glenn St. Mary, Fla., Eddie and Sue Carrigg of East Lake, Ohio, David Carrigg of Jacksonville, Fla., Tommy Carrigg of Phoenix, Ariz., and Steve Davis of Andalusia; her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Ken Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Denise and James Harrell of Opp and Irene Kirk of Andalusia; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Nita Heath of Greenville, Lee R. and Brenda Jo Heath of Sellers, Hiram Driggers of Lakeland, Fla., Jimmy and Mary Driggers of Hollow Rock, Tenn., and Steve and Karen Locke of Lake Alfred, Fla.; her sisters and brother-in-law, Sue Spivey of Pace, Fla., Mary Bennett of Andalusia and Barbara and Don Sessions of Shelby, N.C.

Pallbearers will be Steve Davis, Allen Baxter, DeWayne Harris, Floyd Heath, Lee Heath and Hiram Driggers.

SYBIL R. FLOYD

Sybil R. Floyd, 84, of Andalusia, died Sun., Nov. 20, 2011, at the Opp hospital.

Funeral services were held on Tues., Nov. 23, from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Vaughn and the Rev. Kenneth Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in Stone Lake Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Earl Cleghorn of Andalusia, Sylvia Diane Walters of Oceanside, Calif., and Ruth Constance and Jim Mohon of Andalusia; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren

Pallbearers will be Justin Beverly, Sean Grissett, John Hudson, Daryl Beverly, Billy Bickley, and Tanner Carter.

FRANCES DYKES WARD

Frances Dykes Ward, 94, of Andalusia, died Sun., Nov. 20, 2011, in the Andalusia Manor nursing facility.

She was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Dothan, and moved to Andalusia at the age of 7. Her parents owned Dykes Dairy, located on Lindsey Bridge Road.

She was married 68 years to her husband, Charles Judson Ward Jr., who served the business community for more than 50 years as the owner of Ward-Bell Television Appliance Center Inc. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, training union and VBS for many years. She visited members of the Extension Department faithfully. She loved her family, cooking, gardening and studying her Bible.

Funeral services were held on Tues., Nov. 22, from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Fred Karthaus officiating and burial following in Magnolia Cemetery. Special music will be performed by Dwight Crigger and Martha Givhan.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sara and Bobby Craft of Opp and Judy and Edward Buck of Andalusia; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Judson Ward III and his wife, Jullianne, of Dothan; grandchildren, Susan Russell, Robert Craft, David Craft, Karen Ayers, Greg Craft, Gary Buck, Linda McLelland, Cynthia Gregory and Joyce Cobb; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brothers, the Rev. James Dykes, the Rev. Oscar Dykes, Hubbard Dykes and Charles Dykes; her sister, Amorrette Reese; and also a large number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilson Hubbard Dykes Sr., and Annie Melinda Murphy Dykes; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles Judson Ward Sr. and Shellie Amanda Gavin Ward; her husband, Charles Judson Ward Jr.; a sister-in-law, Martha Ward Spies; granddaughter, Katherine Buck Nall; an infant great-grandson, Frank Ray McLelland Jr.; brothers, the Rev. Raymond Dykes and Morgan Dykes; and sister, Hazel Adams.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Gary Buck, Tim Nall, David Craft, Greg Craft, Jeff Gregory, Frank McLelland, David Cobb and Danny Ayers.
