There are some 100 Community Christmas angels that have yet to be turned in for next weekend’s distribution, said event organizer Larry Avery.

This year, more than 500 “angels” were registered for assistance from the Andalusia Community Christmas, which provides Christmas gifts for children of needy families.

“We have 75 to 100 packages still not turned in, and this includes the 30 or so that were not adopted,” he said.

This past weekend, volunteers were busy accepting gift donations at the Kiwanis Center, and those who might have missed the drop off will have a second chance Friday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Avery said.

He also reminded residents of the importance of monetary donations. Avery said previously that because of the economic situation, the organization made two significant changes to this year’s program. The first was a reduction in the number of bicycles given each year. Last year, 165 were distributed. This year, that number drops to 140.

Additionally, the group also reduced the maximum age of participation from 13 to 12 to reduce the overall cost.

Recent figures show that through the organization approximately $50,000 a year is spent to provide Christmas for the needy families.

Donations, which are also being accepted for those who don’t wish to shop for a Christmas angel, are tax-deductible and should be mailed to Andalusia Community Christmas Inc., P.O. Box 1525, Andalusia, AL 36420. This year’s Christmas party will be held Fri., Dec. 16, at the Kiwanis Center.
