Local group to provide Christmas meals

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is once again organizing efforts to provide a free meal to anyone who needs it this Christmas, and it will do so under a new name – Jo’s Community Dinners – in honor of its founder Josephine Mosdell.

Organizer Jan Morris said Mosdell and several others began this meal “20-something” years ago, and the tradition is being carried on this Christmas. Mosdell passed away before Thanksgiving.

This year’s meal will be held Sun., Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

“Anyone in the community can come and get a good meal, or call us and we’ll deliver,” Morris said.

Morris said, while the event is hosted by St. Mary’s, they rely on help from civic clubs, other churches and individuals from the community.

“We wouldn’t be able to do it without people’s help,” she said. “We need volunteers, especially this Christmas since it’s on a Sunday.”

Morris said many of the “normal” volunteers are obligated to their own church that day.

“As always we need donations,” she said.

Morris said meals will be available for dine-in, carry out or delivery.

“We just ask that if we need to deliver, that you give us a day’s notice,” she said.

Additionally, St. Mary’s hosts a Thanksgiving dinner each year.
