Jane Harris McLeod, 74, died on Dec. 19, 2011.

A memorial service will be held on Wed., Dec. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home Chapel in Tallahasse, Fla.

Born in Andalusia on Oct. 17, 1937, she graduated from Andalusia High School and then attended the University of Alabama, where she earned her bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry in 1960. After several years of devoting care to her mother, she worked with the State of Alabama labs and Leon Loard Photography in Montgomery.

Following a move to Brewton, she was employed as a social worker and activity director by the New Hope Manor Nursing Home. She later moved to work with AHCA as a medical health program analyst in Tallahassee, Fla. She retired from this position after 27 years of service on Oct. 30, 2002.

She was a very creative individual, who loved almost any outdoor activity, such as hunting, fishing, hiking and gardening. She created and displayed a timeline of the lives of her favorite authors and composers of opera and classical music from the 1600 to 1950. She also had a special love for dogs, adopting many from the Gadsden County Humane Society.

She was the youngest daughter of Coleman D. McLeod and M.D. and Ernestine Gordon McLeod of Alabama.

She is survived by her sister, Ernestine McLeod Burke Roberts (Ed); her nephew, James Kelly Burke (Nancy) and their children, Sarah Jane and Ryan Kelly Burke; and two cousins, Sallie Willcox of Defuniak Springs, Fla., and Carolyn Hull of Bessemer.

A very special thank you to Cynthia and Joe McMillan for their daily loving care of Jane since 2003, when they still went to visit her at Mrs. Stokely’s. A special thank you, also, to Lenora Stokely and her assistants for their excellent and devoted care. Since Aug. 19, their love made Jane’s final days so much more comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Big Bend Hospice of Wakulla, 2889 Crawfordville, Hwy., Suite C, Crawfordville, FL 32327.
