This New Year’s holiday, local law enforcement is adopting a zero tolerance for driving under the influence.

Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams said Friday a “full crew” will be patrolling city streets, looking for impaired drivers.

“Our officers will be acutely aware of the dangers that are created by those who choose to operate a motor vehicle while inhibited,” he said. “We encourage our citizens to enjoy the celebration of the New Year, but we also want to remind them to be very careful and please don’t drink and drive.

“Either have a designated driver or make plans to stay at the location where adult beverages are being consumed,” he said. “We have enjoyed a rather safe year here in our community, and we don’t want to end 2011 or start 2012 with any disasters.”

Williams also cautioned those thinking about ringing in the New Year with fireworks.

“We would remind our citizens that fireworks of all descriptions are illegal in Andalusia,” he said. “If we encounter illegal fireworks, the person could face arrest and will be required to make an appearance bond before they can be released from custody. Any and all illegal fireworks will be confiscated and destroyed at a later date.”

Opp and Florala also have ordinances prohibiting f fireworks in the city limits.

Highway travel during the New Year holiday is expected to be heavy in Alabama.

Chief Deputy David Anderson of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies will continue their traffic blitz targeting impaired drivers. Alabama State Troopers are also conducting a similar blitz.
