Kindergarten registration under way in Opp

It’s that time of year again – kindergarten registration.
Opp Elementary School kicked off the season yesterday with registration.
It may seem early, but school officials said it provides valuable information needed for planning purposes.
Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.
The presence of the child is requested, but not mandatory.
Andalusia Elementary School will hold its registration March 19-20, during regular school hours.
“Kindergarten registration obviously allows us to plan for the coming year in terms of number of classes needed, but a lot more is involved,” ACS superintendent Ted Watson said. “Our teachers and nurses do vision, hearing and speech screenings so that we are able to accommodate for any special needs in advance of our students arrival in the fall.
“The registration time also allows teachers and students to visit and put names with faces in a very informal setting,” he said. “It is also a time to show the students around and let them get more acclimated to their surroundings for the coming year.”
Students registering with the Opp system will receive screening to determine skill levels in letter naming, colors, shapes, counting, numbers and more, officials said.
Opp’s will continue the next few weeks from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Pleasant Home School’s is set for March 30, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Fleeta Jr. High, Red Level Elementary and WS Harlan Elementary Schools have not set their registration dates yet.
For more information, contact the guidance counselor at the respective school.
To register, parents must bring the following:
• an original birth certificate;
• an original Social Security card; and
• the child’s blue immunization card.
