A funeral in River Falls is guaranteed to be like no other you’ve ever seen.

Members of the River Falls Community Center have teamed up once again to reproduce a play many of their parents put on some 50 years ago titled “Pete Skinner’s Funeral: Dead or Alive.”

“It is a remake of a play our parents used to do about 50 years ago,” said organizer Mattie Freeney. “The old teachers and members of the community were involved.”

This hilarious play tells the story of “Pete,” a man “who always planted his corn on time, (but) whom Lucifer loved best,” who has been rumored to have died.

Freeney said the characters are nearly all in place, and this year, the character Pete will be a surprise.

Freeney said the purpose of the play is two-fold.

“It has a dual purpose to raise money for the center and to bring some quality of life to the community,” she said. “We are working to complete the siding (on the building). We didn’t raise quite enough money to do that with the last one, so we are hoping that this time we’ll be able to complete that project.”

Freeney said they will add a new portion to the show this year, a singing.

“Last year, after repast, the audience gathered for singing, and they thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said. “This year, Mary Ann Bullard, will lead them in a singing of hymns and spirituals. We think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Freeney said tickets sell out quickly, and there’s only seating capacity for 200.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Tickets can be purchased from Freeney, Golar Church, Albert Porter, Corene Ross, Charleta Davis and Joseph Robinson, or at Amazing Grace Café in Dozier.

The menu will consist of a choice of two meats and a variety of side dishes and desserts.

The play will be held Sat., March 31 at Bright Beginnings Preschool.
