AHS girls win regional championship

MOBILE — Andalusia’s full-court press was simply too much for UMS-Wright today in the Class 4A girls South Regional championship at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center.

Senior guard Alexis Horton had 22 points and 10 steals to help lead AHS to a 41-35 victory over UMS, and the right to play in the Final 4 next week at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham.

Andalusia and UMS-Wright played the game close in the first period, but AHS had the lead at 6-4 going into the second period.

AHS led 17-13 at half time, and outscored UMS-Wright 14-11 in the third period.

Andalusia’s Shi’Amber Townsend had 11 points and nine rebounds to pace her team.

Alison Daniels chipped in seven points.

UMS-Wright didn’t have a player finish in double figures. Ashley Scott, an eighth grader, led her team with nine points.

Andalusia will play Good Hope (33-1), the Northwest Regional champion, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the semifinals of the state tournament.
