Andalusia’s Abbie Young hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 6-0 area victory over rival Straughn on Thursday night at the sports complex.

Young also led AHS in hitting, going 2-for-3 for the night.

Andalusia built a small lead in the first inning, scoring three runs before Young’s home run in the second put it ahead 6-0.

The Lady Bulldogs put up another solid defensive effort, committing no errors in the field.

“Another great defensive game for us,” AHS coach Teresa Herring said. “Abbie’s home run was a big home run.

“I talked to them after the game and said, ‘6-0 is a lot better than 3-0 going into these later innings.'”

Young’s home run was the first for the Lady Bulldogs this season, and her first as a player.

For Straughn, the Lady Tigers struggled at the plate, only tallying five hits.

“We just didn’t do a real good job of making an adjustment or two that we needed at the plate,” SHS coach Trent Taylor said. “The girl (Andalusia’s Maggie Lambert) did a good job of throwing strikes. If you’re going to win, you’re going to see girls that can sure enough bring it, and then there are girls that don’t have the speed.”

Morgan Waite, Jacie Williamson, Kristen Peavey, Rachel Edson and Molly Stewart had one hit each for the Lady Tigers.

On the mound, Lambert won her second game this week — her first was against Opp on Tuesday night — pitched a complete seven innings.

“Maggie’s on fire right now,” Herring said.

Andalusia will visit Pleasant Home today at 5 p.m. in regular season action.
