New principals were named Tuesday at Straughn High and Fleeta Jr. High school, but the search is now on for a new Florala High School principal.

The moves, which were described as a “domino effect,” also created openings for assistant principals at Pleasant Home and SHS.

Board members unanimously agreed to hire Randy McGlaun as Fleeta’s principal, while John Allen Evers will move to the SHS principal role. Both hires are effective as of July 1. McGlaun, who is currently the PHS assistant principal, also previously served as a junior high basketball coach and social studies teacher at Red Level.

Evers has served as the SHS assistant principal for the last four years.

“It’s a busy time for the Covington County School System,” said board president Jimmy Prestwood. “And it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down until the middle of summer when we name the new assistant principals.”

Donny Powell, the current FHS principal and previous candidate for superintendent, was hired as the system’s new federal programs coordinator, beginning July 1.

Prestwood said applications for the FHS principal slot will be accepted beginning today, with a new hire announced at the June 19 board meeting.

The three hires were among the 15 personnel changes approved at the night’s meeting. Other hires, which will be effective at the beginning of the school year, included:

• Brian J. Jones as math teacher FHS;

• Joseph Allen Watson as custodian/substitute bus driver at PHS;

• Jennifer Davis Warthen as bus driver at PHS;

• Deborah C. McKathan as special education paraprofessional at PHS;

• Emilee K. Lloyd as math teacher at PHS;

• James Caton Sims as English teacher at Red Level High School;

• Samantha Kodadek as teacher at Straughn Elementary; and,

• Stephen E. Bowen as math teacher at SHS;

Resignations accepted included those of:

• Bethany Lott as special education teacher at Fleeta;

• Jeffery Chatman as custodian at FHS; and,

• Justin Jones as physical education teacher and coach at FHS.

Board members also approved a $101,050 annual contract with newly hired superintendent Shannon Driver. Driver, who served as the SHS principal, will begin his new job on July 1.
