Opp got some afternoon vengeance on New Brockton as the Lady Bobcats swept the Gamecocks 2-0 to claim the Kinston Volleyball Tournament championship on Saturday.

The Lady Bobcats won the championship match 25-18, 25-21 in the best of three series.

OHS coach Christie Spurlin said the girls realized it was going to take a lot of “team work” to beat New Brockton.

“They played well together,” Spurlin said. “In the first game against New Brockton, we were missing serves. It was just not good.

“After that, everything was good,” she said. “Everybody had a good game.”

In Opp’s first match against NBHS, the Lady Bobcats got off to a slow start, falling 2-1 (25-18, 19-25, 18-25) to start pool play.

From there, the Lady Bobcats put the opening loss behind them and swept Carroll-Ozark 2-0 (25-14, 25-7) and Zion Chapel (25-23, 25-9) in pool play to finish as the top seed going into bracket play.

The Lady Bobcats played Kinston in bracket play and went on to win 2-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-14) to advance to the tournament finals against New Brockton.

The tournament win was the first for the Lady Bobcats (7-1) this season.

Pleasant Home beat Houston Academy and Andalusia, but lost to the host team.

The Lady Eagles did well enough for the day, finishing 2-1 in pool play, but couldn’t advance by a 10th of a point, PHS coach Jerry Davis said.

“We had a great day,” Davis said. “We played extremely well that morning.”

PHS had Kinston down 20-15, but the Lady Bulldogs came back to beat it in the next game for the sweep. KHS won 25-23, 25-11.

PHS defeated HA 25-18, 20-25, 25-17; and Andalusia 25-23, 25-18 in other action.

As of Monday, the Lady Eagles are 4-1. They had a match against Laurel Hill last night, and in earlier action last week, the Lady Eagles beat Elba 3-0 in varsity action and 2-0 in JV play.
