A thief smashed the door to gain entrance to Darby’s early Monday.

Employees at Darby’s Pharmacy on S. 3-Notch St. were happy for the warm weather Monday as one of the front doors was completely missing for most of the day after an overnight burglary.

Owner Laura Darby said the store’s alarm system was tripped around midnight Monday morning when someone gained entry to the store by shattering one of the two glass doors.

“We have an alarm system and it went off when the door was broken,” Darby said. “That alerted the alarm company, and they called the police.”

Darby said the person or persons responsible for the burglary made off with an undisclosed amount of narcotics from the store’s pharmacy.

Investigators with the Andalusia Police Department said they were not yet ready to release a list of the stolen medications due to the ongoing investigation, but Darby said she was able to supply officers with a complete inventory of what was taken.

“We do inventory every January, so we know what was taken,” Darby said, adding the person or persons responsible seemed to be after specific medications.

“They knew what they wanted,” she said.

Darby said her family has been in the pharmacy business for 32 years, and Monday’s burglary was the first such incident they have seen.
