The Andalusia Animal Shelter is experiencing a record-breaking number of animals, AAS manager Christin Ball said Friday.

Ball said there are currently 50 animals at the shelter, which she said is the biggest pre-season influx she’s seen in her 10 years with the shelter.

“This is what a no-kill shelter is,” she said. “And we’ve gotten these animals in a two-week period.”

Ball said the reason for the influx is that it’s springtime.

“Everything is starting to come out,” she said. “We have puppies, kittens and people are bringing them all in. This has been one of the worst preseason hits in my 10 years here. We can’t take anymore animals right now.”

Ball said the shelter is equipped to handle about 30 animals inside.

“We are bursting at the seams,” she said. “We are trying desperately to get people to adopt.”

In an effort to do so, shelter officials are waiving the adoption fee and only charging the $62 for spay or neuter and shots. It typically costs $92 to adopt.

Still, Ball said they’ve only adopted two or three animals this week.

For those considering adoption, the shelter currently has a wide array of breeds and mixed-breeds from which to choose.

“We have anything from small to extra large,” she said. “We have Chihuahuas, terrier mixes, Cocker Spaniels, Labs, St. Bernard-mixes. Really, we have almost any kind of dog you can imagine.”

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and is located on Coliseum Avenue.
