Postal worker Susan Brown assists Tara Cook Monday afternoon at the Andalusia Post Office, where many were busy as today’s tax deadline loomed.

It may seem to sneak up on you every year, but the deadline to file income taxes has once again arrived, leaving many people scrambling for last-minute filing opportunities.

In Andalusia, the post office was full Monday as many residents rushed to send off payments before today’s deadline.

At H&R Block, office manager Sarah Boyington said her staff can still help those who have yet to file.

“We do have some openings (today),” Boyington said. “They may have to wait, but we do have some room. We have quite a few appointments, but we’ll work them in.”
Boyington said this time of year is almost always hectic, so anyone who hasn’t yet filed shouldn’t fill alone.

“We have plenty of people that come in and file, or file extensions right before the deadline, or on the day of the deadline,” she said.
Boyington stressed that people should at least attempt to file an extension before the end of business hours today.

“If you can’t get in to file, just file an extension,” she said. “It’s pretty quick. We are open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until the last person that came in before 6 p.m. has been taken care of.”

Boyington said all that is needed to file an extension is a name, a Social Security number and a correct address.

“With that, we can electronically file it, and it’s free,” she said.

Boyington said, for those who do choose to file an extension, taxes may be filed at H&R Block on any Tuesday.

“We are open at the Andalusia location every Tuesday for the rest of the year,” she said.

H&R Block is located on the Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway, across from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in the former Jade Homes building.
