WILLIAM RUSSELL SALTER

William Russell Salter, 87, of Panama City, Fla. formerly of Andalusia, passed away Wed., April 16, 2014, at Florala Health and Rehab.

Graveside services will be held today, Fri., April 18, at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with his son-in-law Bill Spivey officiating the service and Foreman Funeral Home directing. The family will meet with friends at the cemetery.

Salter is survived by his wife, Suan Salter of Panama City; daughters and sons-in-law, Ellie Salter and Bill Spivey of Panama City and Sally Salter and Yank Lovelace of Brewton; grandchildren, Will (Sonnie) Spivey, Robb (Kristie) Spivey, Russ Spivey, Mallory Martin and Hayes Martin III; and great-grandchildren, Betty Spivey and Madi Spivey.

JOHNNNY MAC WEED

Johnny Mack Weed, age 75, of Andalusia died Wed., April 16, 2014. A memorial service will be held Sat., April 19, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Foreman’s Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. John Townsend and the Rev. Cindy Howard officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Weed served as chairman of the Covington County Commission from 1985 until 1995. Many county improvements can be attributed to his untiring efforts and leadership skills during his tenure in office. He was instrumental in establishing the first countywide water system, which now services most rural county residences. He worked diligently to secure funds to construct a Senior Nutrition Center on the LBW campus. Through his generous donation of 10 acres of property on the Southern By Pass, a much-needed new health department facility was constructed. He had a desire to improve the county road system, often loaning his personal construction equipment to the county, and signing a $1.2 million personal guaranty to help the county secure new equipment. He donated his time and equipment to demolish the old Ice House Building behind Clark Cinema, making way for the construction of a new city parking lot. Through his efforts, the county constructed a parking lot on the former Shreve Building property just off Court Square. Mr. Weed had a soft spot for Covington County children, personally sponsoring youth agricultural shows and events, ball teams, and providing scholarships to LBW Community College.

Mr. Weed is survived by his wife, Carolyn; a daughter, Melinda (Darrell) Denny; a son, Jon (Beth) Weed; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of Andalusia. He is also survived by his brother Charles (Donna) Weed of Pinckard, Ala.; his sisters, Frances Maund of Ozark, Peggy (John) Townsend of Ashburn, Ga., and Martha Nan Crabtree of Dothan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles J. and Florine A. Weed, and his brother, Andrew Terry Weed of Midland City, Ala.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rufus Armstrong, Buddy Brannon, Johnny Duggan, Jimmy Grissett, C. L. Kirkpatrick, Campbell Kyle, Grady Lanier, Don McCleod, Gary Petty, John Walker and Tim Riley.

In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to the Rice and Beans Ministry at St. Mary’s Church in Andalusia or the American Diabetes Association.

WEAD HICKS

Wead Hicks, 82, of Andalusia died Wed., April 16, 2014, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be Sat., April 19 at 10 a.m. at Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Ganus and the Rev. Greg Cotter officiating. Interment will follow at Oakey Ridge Cemetery.

Hicks was a three-term representative on the Covington County Commission for District 2 from the mid 1970s to mid 1980s.

Hicks is survived by a son, Donald (Debbie) Hicks of Andalusia; a daughter, Lisa Hicks of Montgomery; three grandchildren, Neil (Gina) Hicks, Scott (Teri) Hicks and Brandy (Chris) Brownlee; five great-grandchildren, Tori, Lindsey, Anna Beth, Addison Hicks and John Tyler Brownlee; brother and sister-in-laws, Dan (Nell) Hicks of Dade City, Fla. And Linda (Ronnie) Skiff of Franklinton, N.C.; and brother-in-law, Tom Byrd of Lakeland, Fla.

Pallbearers will be Neil Hicks, Scott Hicks, Chris Brownlee, Scott Dunn, Ralph Barefoot and Serge Nazario. Visitation will be after 5:30 p.m. today at Foreman’s.

MALLIE S. PURDY

Mallie S. Purdy, 95, of Andalusia died Thurs., April 17, 2014, in a local hospital. Graveside services will be Sat., April 19, at 2 p.m. at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery with Dr. Fred Karthaus officiating and Foreman Brown Funeral Home directing.

Purdy is survived by a daughter, Janis (John) Clements of Birmingham and a son, Dr. Jim (Susan) Purdy of Atlanta.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to First Baptist Church or American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Foreman’s.
