LBW students prepare for an upcoming art show.

LBW Community College will recognize excellence in the visual arts as it presents the 30th annual student art show, April 24-May 1, in the Andalusia campus art gallery.

“This year, we are featuring more than 50 individual pieces submitted in different categories, such as drawings in black and white, drawings in color, two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, and graphic design,” said Misti Purvis, art instructor.

“Drawing I students have completed a fantastic still-life and are working on their photo realistic images, all done in graphite,” she said.

“Students in Drawing II have created large colorful pastel drawings along with working in color pencils.”

In addition, students in two-dimensional design have created fantasy worlds in Photoshop and eccentric black and white designs using paper, while students in three-dimensional design have worked with clay, cardboard sculptures and reflecting paper art, she said.

“The show is going to be one of the best ever and include so many different mediums,” said Purvis. “It’s a must-see show.”

Purvis said she is excited that three of her students plan to continue their training in art at various universities where they will further develop their skills and understanding of art.

“The other students will simply enjoy the benefits of their art experiences and apply their knowledge and understanding to their everyday lives.”

The public is invited to attend a reception in the gallery to honor the art students on April 24, 2014, 4-6 p.m.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in the William H. McWhorter Learning Resource Center on the LBWCC Andalusia campus, and open for viewing Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
