It’s official: Opp Cablevision has been sold to Andy Cable.

The city of Opp and the Opp Utilities board made it official on Thursday with two emergency meetings to approve an asset agreement for $2.5 million for the equipment and another $2 million that will be put into an escrow account and will be put toward the city’s bond issue.

Attorney Tom Albritton explained that a decades- old local amendment was passed which gave the city authority to enter into the cable business.

Over the years, the utility board had taken over the duties.

The amendment made it necessary for the Opp City Council to approve the sale.

During the council meeting, Council member TD Morgan expressed concern over whether the city’s employees would be retained by Andy Cable.

Mayor John Bartholomew assured Morgan that the employees would continue to have jobs.

Morgan and councilman Bobby Ray Owens, who also sits on the utilities board, asked if there would be a rate increase.

Andy Cable’s Mike Russell explained that Andy Cable was increasing its rates in November and that Opp residents could expect a $3 a month increase.

Additionally, residents can expect to receive a separate bill from Andy Cable each month.

Morgan asked Russell if Andy Cable will have an office for customers’ convenience in Opp, and Russell said the company will.
