Auditor: Florala in good shape

The City of Florala received an unqualified opinion in its FYE 2014 audit, council members learned Monday.
Ben Vance, CPA, reviewed the town’s audit, and said revenues were up $80,000 in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2014, over the previous year.
Some of the town’s expenses also were up, he said, adding that $100,000 of the increase was for capital expenditures, including the purchase of new police cars.
“Overall, you’re in a better than the previous year,” Vance said. “And not in bad position, cash wise.”
Councilwoman Hazel Lee asked Vance to compare Florala to cities of similar size.
“You are better than some,” he said. “You’re not overburdened with debt. A few years ago when interest rates were so low, a lot of people borrowed money for projects.
“Florala’s in good shape,” he said. “If you had a stronger tax base, and all these store fronts were filled, the problems would go away quickly. The closer the four-laning of Hwy. 331 gets, the more traffic you should see through here in the summer months, and that should help.
“At worst, you’re in average condition,” he said. “But you’re above that because of lack of debt.”
