ALFA group comes to county

The Alabama Farmers Federation’s annual beef tour brought a group of cattlemen to Covington County for a closer look at Wiggins Farm Monday.

The group began the five-day trip in Montgomery Monday morning, and toured farms in Hope Hull, Luverne, Elba, and Enterprise before arriving in Andalusia.

Ricky Wiggins explained that in the local operation, cattle feed on grasses grown on crop land in the winter months, and most are shipped west to Texas to feed when it’s time to plant crops.

Wiggins Farm sells cattle when they reach 1,100 to 1,200 pounds, he said.

From Andalusia, the group continued to Evergreen, where they had dinner at The Depot and spent the night. From there, the tour continues to the Black Belt, then to Northwest Alabama, through Cullman County and back to East Alabama before ending in Montgomery.
