Covington County battle, fall in quarterfinals to Opp

The Covington County 12U All-Stars battled back from a loss on Friday night with a 13-7 victory over Evergreen on Saturday in the Cal Ripken 12U district tournament in Andalusia.

However, Covington County was eliminated from the tournament with an 8-2 loss against Opp.

 

COVINGTON 

COUNTY 13, 

EVERGREEN 7

After falling behind early in the game, the Covington County 12U All-Stars pulled out a 13-7 victory over Evergreen.

Covington County broke through first in the bottom of the first inning with four runs. A balk gave Covington County their first run of the game and a single from Zavier Phillips scored Micah Turner to give them a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, an error and two hit batters gave the Evergreen All-Stars bases loaded with one out.

The next Evergreen batter drove a double into the outfield that cleared the bases. Three more base hits from Evergreen put them on top 6-4 heading into the top of the second.

Covington County began to battle back in the bottom of the third inning and tied the game 6-6.

Turner followed with line drive single and promptly stole second. Phillips then drove in Turner for the tying run.

After Evergreen took a 7-6 lead in the top of the fourth, the Covington County All-Stars began tearing the cover off the ball and jumped out front 13-7.

Evan Godwin and Guilford followed with RBI singles to put Covington County on top 9-7. Two Evergreen errors pushed the Covington County lead up to 11-7. Parker Kennedy added an RBI single and Phillips scored the final run of the game to put Covington County in the quarterfinals against Opp.

COUNTY 2

Opp took an early led in the quarterfinals and held on for an 8-2 victory over Covington County.

Ethan Cox gave Opp a 2-0 lead with two-run blast in the top of the first inning.

Jered Hawkins scored on triple from Josh Hawkins in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.

Opp didn’t pick up a hit for the remainder of the game, but six walks and three errors lead to Opp picking up an 8-2 win and spot in the tournament’s semifinals against East Brewton on Sunday.

Turner scored Covington County’s other run in the elimination game.
