The Covington County 8U All-Stars blistered their way to a state championship recently and will now head to Mountain Home, Ark., to compete in the Southeast Babe Ruth 8U Regional tournament on July 13.

“This girls have been absolutely impressive,” Covington County head coach Heath Williamson said. “They have really amazed me with how they have played to be as young as they are.”

The teams dedication and willingness to learn has been something Williamson he has truly been amazed by.

“Everything that we have tried to teach them, they have picked it up very quickly,” Williamson said. “They are very eager to learn and they are super quick to catch on.”

Something else that Williamson has been impressed with has been the communities willingness to support the team.

“This trip wouldn’t have been possible without the help of some very generous people and businesses in the community,” Williamson said. “The community has really done an outstanding job donating money to help these girls make the trip.”

As for the trip itself, Williamson said the team will arrive in Arkansas on July 12, for the opening ceremonies before getting the tournament started on July 13.

“These girls are so excited about this opportunity,” Williamson said. “The thought of playing girls from several different states is something they are really looking forward to.”

Williamson said that he thinks the girls have a good chance of making a good showing if they continue to do the things that have got them to this point.

“If we can just keep hitting like we did in the state tournament, we can score some runs,” Williamson said. “Just keep hitting and limit the few mistakes on defense is our key.”
