Hummingbird Landing may have opened a few months ago, but officials are still working diligently to fill up the apartments.

District Manager Beth Engram said since May, they have filled only 29 of the 56 apartments.

The apartments are spread out over a campus that includes three separate buildings, a gazebo, and community center complete with a library, computer room and fitness center.

Engram said the one-bedroom apartments are full and they have started a waiting list.

A one-bedroom apartment is 779 square feet and has one bathroom. Rent is $295 per month.

A two-bedroom apartment is 1,098 square feet and has two bathrooms. Rent is $393 per month.

Each apartment features nice vinyl flooring, and washer/dryer connections, but there are also washer/dryer facilities in each building. The apartments also include garbage disposals, ice makers, appliances, nice closet space and a patio or balcony.

“They are also equipped for the elderly,” Engram said. “We have two elevators, as well. No one should have to pull the stairs unless they want to.”

The apartments are specifically designed for the 55-and-over crowd.

Site Manager Lynn Wascom said they accept Section 8 vouchers.

Additionally, Engram and Wascom said they are offering a month’s free rent on 10 selected units, if approved by Oct. 20.

“We have six on top of building one and four on top in building two,” Engram said. “We want to fill our first two buildings before we open up our third building.”

“It’s a good deal, but it’s only temporary,” Wascom said.

They are also offering referral incentives to current tenants.

Engram said they have people coming through the doors, but they are either not old enough or have too much income.

“We want people to know that they don’t have to sell their house to have an apartment,” she said. “Your home is your asset, not an income.”

Wascom said she is also holding monthly activities in the community center for the tenants. “I send out a calendar letting them know what is going on,” she said. “We play bingo, dominoes, have a movie day, and a birthday celebration once a month. We also have a quarterly potluck.”

Additionally, she said they are trying to get community members to come and facilitate classes with the residents.

“We hope to get the fire department to come out and talk about fire challenges,” she said. Engram said those are typical activities that take place at the other properties.

Those interested in applying for an apartment may visit the property on Moore Road for a tour.

Then, they will receive an application and management will review the application with potential tenants.

“It’s not income-based rent, but we do have a income cap for selection,” Engram said.
