The Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority did not record a single drop of rain at its two monitoring points in Covington County in October, and only recorded a total of 0.16 inches at its 22 monitoring points in its nine-county service area in the same time frame.
In October of last year, the Choc-Pea Authority recorded 2.24 inches at Yellow River on Hwy. 55, and 2.79 inches at Yellow River on Hwy. 84.
Year to date, 43.88 inches of rain have fallen at Yellow River on Hwy. 55, compared to 46.27 inches for the same period in 2015. For the same period, 45.53 inches were recorded at Yellow River on Hwy. 84. An accurate comparison to last year cannot be made, as the Choc-Pea only began monitoring levels at Yellow River on Hwy. 84 in February of 2015.
The average annual rainfall year to date for the entire region is 41.25 inches, compared to 41.90 inches for the same period last year.
While it is really dry in Covington County, it is one of only 21 Alabama counties in which emergency level droughts have not been declared. A state of emergency exists in 46 counties.
