Seizing the opportunity

Tramekquez “Tree” Lane did his part to help lead the Opp Bobcats into the playoffs several times in his high school career, and now the hulking linebacker gets a chance to shine on the college stage after committing to Alcorn State University.

“I’m the only one in my family that has ever made it this far in sports and that feels pretty good,” Lane said. “I feel like I’m going to make it pretty far. I want to play in the NFL one day.”

The 6’4” 235-pounder is built like freight train and spent his career with the Bobcats punishing opposing ball carriers and anyone that got in between.

Lane finished his high school career with 215 tackles and 10 sacks.

The opportunity to play college football is something that Lane has dreamed about for a long time.

“I’ve been wanting to play football for as long as I can remember,” Lane said. “I started playing back in Pee Wee and I haven’t looked back since.”

When deciding on what college to commit to, Lane said it was his visit to Alcorn State that sealed the deal.

“We went up there on a recruiting trip and it was just a really nice place,” Lane said. “The coaches told me that they would do what they needed to do for me to make sure that I do well, not only on the field but also in the classroom.”

While he is going there to play football, Lane said that he knows academics are far more important.

“Regardless of what I do on the field, I want to get my degree,” Lane said. “I’m going to make sure I keep my grades up. I’m going to stay in the books and become a weight room junkie.”

On the field, Lane said he is willing to do what it takes to better the team.

“They have a very good football team,” Lane said. “I just want to get there and do my part to make the team better. I think that I can help out.”

Lane will officially sign with Alcorn State on Feb. 1.
