Sheriff: 100+ sex offenders here
Published 12:00 am Friday, July 7, 2017
Sheriff Dennis Meeks said this week that there are more than 100 registered sex offenders in the county.
“There are 26 who are convicted and are currently incarcerated,” he said. “We still have to check on them and make sure they are incarcerated and haven’t been released. We have to know what facility they are in.”
Meeks said there are 106 registered offenders in the county and five are females.
“A lot of people don’t think of females as sex offenders,” he said. “But if y’all will remember over the last year or two, we had some females in Opp.”
Meeks said there are rules that sex offenders must abide by and it’s the department’s job to ensure that convicted sex offenders are complying.
“A registered sex offender cannot live within 2,000 feet of a day care or school or 2,000 feet of their victim,” he said.
Meeks said when sex offenders were first required to start registering, they had to report annually. The law then made it every six months, and now they must report every quarter.
Meeks said they are required to let investigators assigned to sex offenders know if they have moved or if they change workplaces.
“If they have any changes, we have to update (the registry),” he said.
Meeks said offenders are supposed to come in within a few days if they change residences or workplaces.
“Sometimes, they don’t think about,” he said. “And they tell us in the quarterly update.”
Additionally, Meeks said that if a sex offender lives in Andalusia, Opp or Florala, they have to register with that municipality and the sheriff’s office.
“If they travel out of the county for more than 72 hours, they have to let us know,” he said. “Some sex offenders are homeless. They may live under a bridge. They must still be in compliance.”
Meeks said that a sex offender who identifies as homeless must report weekly to investigators.
“I think we have only had to deal with one since I’ve been in office,” he said. “He actually wound up moving to Florida.”
Meeks said convicted sex offenders also have a designation on their driver’s licenses.
