SHIRLEY PETTY

Mrs. Shirley “Meemoo” Petty, 80, of Red Level, passed away Fri., Nov. 24, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Petty was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on March 10, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Fritz and Irma Ganske Kraske.

Funeral services were on Tues., Nov. 28th from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Hunt officiating. Visitation was on Monday at Foreman Funeral Home.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Gibson; three granddaughters, Cathy Depetris, Susan (Derick) Lee, all of Red Level; Chrissy (Matthew) Perry of Heath; and five great-grandchildren, Braxton Lee, Madison Lee, Anthony Cawthon, Nate Perry, and Sam Perry.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil “Bogy” Petty.

MARY RUTH NOLEN

After battling Alzheimer’s for a number of years, Mary Ruth Nolen passed away peacefully at her home with most of her immediate family at her bedside. For 62 years, she was married to her best friend and constant companion, James L. Nolen, who preceded in death in 2008.

The couple had four children: Larry Nolen (Sylvia) of Seattle, Washington; Chuck Nolen (Janie) of Marianna, Florida; Ruth Anne Glisson (Jimmy) of Tallahassee, Florida; and Nancy Jackson (Johnny) of Opp.

Her grand children include Hunter Nolen (Jennifer) of Marianna, Florida; Lauren Sproull (Thomas) of Tallahassee, Florida; Zack Nolen of Seattle, Washington; Christy Glisson of Tallahassee, Florida; Maredith Mitchell (Michael John) of Marianna, Florida; Jay Jackson (Jennifer) of Opp; Nolen Jackson (Amy) of Opp; and Emily Odom (Blake) Andalusia, Alabama. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren: Murphy, Mabry, Press, Katie, Manning, Clay, Will, Allie, Duncan, Griffin and Blakely.

She served as an elementary and middle school teacher with the Opp City School system for 28 years. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and her Master’s from Troy State-Dothan. She was previously a member of the Opp Education Association and the Alabama Education Association.

Additionally, she taught Sunday school for a number of years at the Opp First United Methodist Church where she also had actively participated in the United Methodist Women. In the community, she also had been active in the Century Club and the Three Arts Club.

Her favorite past times centered her family and cheering for her beloved Alabama Crimson Tide.

Funeral services for Mary Ruth Nolen will be on Wed., Nov. 29, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Wyatt Funeral Home in Opp, Alabama. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service in the chapel at Wyatt Funeral Home. Internment will be at Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens on Highway 52 in Opp.

The family would like to express special thanks to Shirley Lindsey, Juanita Jacobs, and Lorean Williams for the wonderful love and attention the gave to Mrs. Nolen over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be made to the Opp First United Methodist Church.

 

ELMER HILL

Mr. Elmer Lister Hill, 92, of Andalusia, passed away on Sat., Nov. 25, 2017, in Montgomery.

A private family funeral was conducted on Tues., Nov. 28, at Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Billy Boles officiating. The interment followed in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Merle Hill of Montgomery and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Hill; his siblings, Grace Joiner, Gladys Posey, Jack C. Hill, Joe Hill, Bobby O’Neal Hill, and Billy Hill.

Pallbearers were Danny Posey, Gary Posey, Steve Posey, Chip Hill, Kenny Hill, Mark Hill, and Bobby Hill.
