Straughn school gets 25K tech grant

A local school has been awarded a $25,000 Alabama Middle School Computer Initiative Competitive Grant.

Straughn Middle School received the grant from the Alabama State Department of Education on Monday,

“With the money we’re planning to buy 60 Chromebooks, software for programming, professional development, robotics kits,” The principal, Cassandra Scott. We’re all very excited here.”

Chromebooks are laptops that runs on Google’s Chrome OS.

The school hopes to advance more towards a one-to-one school.

“One-to-one is the idea that for every child there is a device or technology they can use,” Barry Wood, Straughn Middle School’s vice principal said. “We want to keep the students of Straughn Middle School competitive. We want them to all have forward thinking, and we are hoping to become known as a S.T.E.M school later on down the road.”

The robotic kits will be implemented during enrichment, Scott said.
