An immersive history learning program continues to teach local students character.

This week, more than 675 Covington County second and fifth grade students graduated from the Super Citizen Program.

“This is the third year we’ve done this program,” the Curriculum Coordinator, Nicki Guilford said. “It’s a great program, it really teaches good character within students at a young age.”

The Super Citizen Program is a 10-week learning experience that was developed by Liberty’s Legacy.

The program is offered to second-fifth graders and gives them lessons in American history, civics, financial literacy, character and career readiness.

“It really helps students gain a sense of pride of who they are as individuals, the pride they have in this country, and who we are as a community.” Guilford said. “It brings a lot of honor for America, and gives them ideas on how to give back and on how to become a citizen.”

The student choose a heroes, someone they think embodies the meaning of true citizenship, and honor that person on stage.

“Each class picks their hero, they vote on and decide on who will best represent them. At the end the hero is presented with an award. The students really learn from this, they see what a good member of society is, and they strive to be that way after the ceremony,” Guilford said.

It ends with a graduation celebration, where the students receive certificates, honor local heroes, stand in front of local leaders to prove they learned from the program.
