Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, is the Republican nominee.
Doug Jones is the former U.S. attorney from Birmingham whose most notable case was his successful prosecution of two co-conspirators in the Birmingham Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing that killed four little girls during the civil rights era. He is a Democrat.
Lee Busby is a Tuscaloosa resident who is mounting a write-in campaign. He is a retired Marine infantry colonel who has also worked as a military contractor and in business. He also was a co-founder of the Alabama Fallen Warriors Project.
A second write-in candidate, Mac Watson, is a native of Crenshaw County and a small business owner.
Fewer than 400,000 of the state’s 3.3 million registered voters participated in this year’s primary process.
Polls show Moore and Jones in a tight race that could hinge on voter turnout.
