The Covington County 4-H program is among the organizations that rely on the help of United Fund to operate.

The United Fund acts as an umbrella organization that gives to non-profit organizations each year within the area. This year, they have a set goal of giving $120,000 back to the community.

In 4-H, student complete hands-on projects in science, health and agriculture.

4-H helps with career readiness, and provides a positive environment with adult mentors.

“Everything we do is really for the children,” County Extension Coordinator Charles Simon said.

For the 4-H programs, that can mean more involvement in the community.

“The money from the United Fund really goes towards our clubs we have for the children in the area,” Simon said.

“That can be anything from our hiking club, our kayaking club we have with the A.P.P.L.E. program, the Cackle Club, and our haunted house we have yearly.”

Each year, the 4-H program receives around $7,000, Simon said.

“Every penny is used and appreciated. Without that money we really wouldn’t be able to all that we do,” Simon said.

The United Fund support provides the 4-H program the ability to pay for travel costs for all of their activities.

“We receive other donations, but the United Fund is one of our main contributors.” Simon said.
