BREAKING OUT THE BROOM: Andalusia Bulldogs sweep up Opp Bobcats

The Andalusia Bulldogs swept the Opp Bobcats in basketball action on Tuesday night in Opp.

B-TEAM

ANDALUSIA 39,

OPP 35

In the opening game of the evening, the Bulldogs held off the Bobcats for a 39-35 victory.

Opp took a 14-12 lead into halftime, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the game 25-25 heading into the final period.

Trailing by two-points, Andalusia’s DeAndre Simon knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 32-31 lead with 3:10 left in the game.

Simon then knocked down a pair of free throws to push the Bulldogs’ lead up to three.

After another Bulldog free throw, Brian Matthews knocked down a pair of free throws for Opp to make the score 35-33 with 1:17 remaining.

The Bobcats tied the game with 40 seconds left on the clock when Matthews drove the lane for a layup.

On the other end of the court, Patrick McCorvey pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back up for a bucket to give Andalusia a 37-35 lead with just 25 seconds left on the clock.

McCorvey closed out the game with a pair of free throws to help guide the Bulldogs to a 39-35 win.

Elijah McClain led the Bulldogs with 12 points, and Simon finished with 10 points.

Matthew led the Bobcats with eight points.

GIRLS

ANDALUSIA 50,

OPP 15

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs rolled to a big 50-15 win over the Opp Lady Bobcats.

Andalusia got off to a strong start with two-straight baskets from Shalisa Thomas.

The Bulldogs then got a jumper from Mia Porter to take an early 6-0 advantage.

Opp followed with a 3-pointer from Vanessa Stoudemire to cut the Lady Bulldog lead in half.

Opp continued to battle and tied the game at 6-6 a few minutes later.

The Lady Bulldogs responded with a few baskets and held a 14-7 lead heading into the second period.

In the second period, Thomas continued to rack up points as she helped the Lady Bulldogs establish a 21-11 lead at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs were off an running in the second half and built a 36-14 lead heading into the final period.

Andalusia held Opp to just one point in the final period and walked away with a 50-15 victory

Thomas led the Lady Bulldogs with a career-high 28 points.

Stoudemire paced the Lady Bobcats with eight points.

BOYS

ANDALUSIA 65,

OPP 48

In the final game of the evening, the Bulldogs outlasted the Bobcats for a 65-48 victory.

Keaun Samuel got the scoring started quickly and had the Bulldogs out front 2-0 with very little time run off the clock.

Opp answered right back as Reggie Thompson found nothing but the bottom of the net on a 3-pointer to put the Bobcats up 3-2.

Andalusia grabbed the lead right back with a reverse layup under the basket from Trey Wilkerson.

Andalusia then turned the ball over to Thompson, who sprinted up the court for a fast-break layup to put Opp back on top.

B.J. Anderson followed with a bucket and pair of free throws to give Andalusia an 8-5 lead.

Opp came right back with a 3-pointer from Javontea Crittenden that knotted the game.

Andalusia then went on streak with buckets from Anderson, Samuel and Luis Reyes. Ethan Wilson added a 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 17-8 lead heading into the second period.

Anderson got the second period started with a layup and 3-pointer to push the Andalusia lead up to 22-8.

Opp got a tip in from Erik Matthews, a 3-pointer from Ethan Baker and a free throw Shawn Tillis, but Andalusia’s surging offense extended its lead to 35-14 heading into halftime.

Matthews started the third period strong and trimmed Andalusia’s lead down to 35-17 early in the period.

After Wilson dropped in a layup, Crittendon knocked down a 3-pointer for the Bobcats.

Both teams continued to trade shots in the third period as the Bulldogs held a 52-33 lead heading into the final period.

Samuel got the scoring started in the final period and had the Bulldogs up 55-33 following a layup and a free throw.

Baker followed with a 3-pointer and trimmed the Andalusia lead back down to 19 points.

After a pair of baskets from Andalusia’s Samuel and Wilkerson, Opp’s Mikale Edwards knocked a down a big 3-pointer.

Moments later, Edwards was at the free throw line where he knocked down both attempts to cut Andalusia’s lead down to 59-41 with just a few minutes left in the game.

On Andalusia’s next possession, R.J. Drish hauled in an offensive rebound and went right back up for a bucket.

Not looking to go away without a fight, Opp’s Reid Josey buried a 3-pointer to dig into the Andalusia lead with just a few minutes left to go in the game.

Following the Josey 3-pointer, Edwards came up with an offensive board and dropped the ball back in to trim Andalusia’s advantage to 61-46.

The Bulldogs were then able to hold off the Bobcats in the final minutes to pick up a 65-48 victory.

Anderson led the Bulldogs with 21 points in the win.

Samuel finished the night with 17 points and Drish added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

“I was pleased that we played with a lot of intensity in the first half,” Andalusia head coach Anthony Clark said. “I was a little disappointed in our rebounding in the second half. It wasn’t as good as it has been, but this is a third game in a row with no practice. We will have a chance to get out there tomorrow and work on a few things. Give Opp credit. They shot the ball well in the second half. We had guys in the right spots, but they were knocking it down from outside.”

The Bobcats hit nine 3-pointers in the loss against the Bulldogs.

Thompson led the Bobcats with 11 points.

Tillis finished the night with nine points.
