MLK events set Sunday, Monday

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to remember a civil rights activist that was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

On Nov. 3, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill that marked the third Monday of every January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday began in 1986 and has been a day for everyone to remember how Dr. King helped move America closer on the ideals that it was founded.

Bethel A.M.E. Church in Andalusia is hosting the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 2:30 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 14. The guest speakers will be Cranita Pitts, Alphonso Simpson, and Cassandra Scott.

St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Andalusia will host an annual tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m. Mon., Jan. 15. The Rev. Denny Benjamin will be the guest speaker.

Opp hosts a Martin Luther King Jr. march starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Opp Police Department and ending on Hardin Street next to the monument.

The First AB Church in Florala is hosting a celebration of life for Martin Luther King Jr. starting at 3 p.m. Monday. The guest speaker will be Senator Bobby Singleton.
