Think fried chicken, collard greens, cracklin’ bread, and all the trimmings.

The annual Taste of Black History has been set for 6 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 3, at the River Falls Community Center.

There will be eating followed by singing of hymns and spiritual songs, organizer Mattie Freeney said.

Food is the main attraction, and the full menu includes fried or baked chicken, chicken and dumplings, collards, black-eyed peas, lima beans, pig’s feet, cracklin’ bread, baked sweet potatoes, Hoppin’ John and rice, pound cakes and cookies.

Tremayne Benson, pastor of New Pilgrim Baptist Church, will lead the music, and be assisted by his wife.

Tickets are free for ages 5 and under, $5 for ages 5-12, and $10 for over age 12. The River Falls Community Center is located at 9710 Gantt Road.

All funds will be used for the center.

For the spring, the River Falls Community Center plans to bring back “Old Fashioned Softball” and anyone can participate.

The event is planned to bring back unity, respect and build love between people and ages. The season is scheduled for Saturdays starting April 7 through May 26.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the Taste of Black History for anyone that wants to sign up.
