A local event that focuses on the food, History and the future of African Americans as a celebration of Black History Month.

Every year, the Carver Community Center in Florala hosts a Black History Gala in celebration of Black History Month.

“People are so unaware of the contributions that we have made to this country,” Hazel Lee, one of the organizers, said.

“It’s important that our children know the history of black people. A huge part of American history is a huge part of black history.”

This year’s speaker is Maria Milton.

“Maria will be speaking about the past, present and future for black Americans,” Lee said.

Lee said it’s important to remember that all people require dignity and respect.

“When I was growing up I was always taught that no human being is above another human being. We are no more than what we are and especially in a time like that.”

Lee says events like this are important because they open up new thought processes.

“Every year we’ve had a speaker that has offered another angle, another way of viewing things about the black community. Sometimes it’s things you never thought about. Like another black historical figure,” she said.

“The event is entirely interracial as well. I believe that everyone should experience this. Come out, enjoy the food and camaraderie.”

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 10, in the Carver Community Center in Florala. Tickets are $10 and all contributions go back to the Carver Community Center.

The dinner will be collard greens, dressing, fried and baked chicken and more.
