‘Thunder’ planned for Memorial Day

Opp residents should brace themselves for a loud Memorial Day in 2018.

The AMVETs post will be hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at Peaceful Acres Cemetery, but this year’s ceremony will be different from years before.

Instead of a typical 21-gun salute, the ceremony will feature an exhibition artillery unit with six cannons fired in rapid succession.

“Every year we try to make our Memorial Day ceremony bigger and better. This year we would like to have a ‘Rolling Thunder and 21 Gun Salute’,” Danny Donaldson, a member of AMVETs, said.

The cannons will fire black powder only and the event will be free of charge to the city and to the AMVETs post.

“The only thing that we ask are some donations,” Donaldson said.

The event is to pay homage to fallen veterans, he said.

“Rolling Thunder is quite the experience to people who have never seen it,” Donaldson said.
