A local high school’s majorette team won big in their division of an international competition last week.

The Opp High School majorettes traveled to Orlando, Fla., to compete in Twirl Mania.

Twirl Mania is an international championship competition for soloists, trams, corps, high schools, universities in the athletic arena of baton twirling, auxiliary units, pompom and dance.

The competition takes place at Walt Disney World in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and lasted from Feb. 16-19.

“The team has been twirling together for three years and have definitely grown together. They have wanted to go to Twirl Mania for years and I told them we would go once we increased our twirl level,” sponsor Leigh Hall said.

“They worked hard, they’re strong twirlers.”

The team held several fundraisers to fund their trip, and even paid for their twirling uniforms out of pocket.

The team performed in four different events, competing against different teams that were in their skill level and age group.

“We competed in the high school classic, the halftime show, parade and the dance-twirl competition,” Hall said.

“It was our first time going so we really didn’t know what to expect from this event, but we did well.”

The team got first place in the dance-twirl competition, second in the halftime show, second in the high school classic and second in the parade competition.

Teams from all over the U.S., Canada and England performed this year, Hall said.

“We practiced through the summer and all the way through football season, twice a week. Usually three hours each practice,” Hall said.

“I’m really pleased with the scores we got, especially for our first year in competition. It shows me we are able to compete.”

Hall says the team looks forward to next year.

“This competition has definitely helped us as a team. Most of the team will be returning next year, so we’ll be learning new things to be even better.”
