Schools celebrate Read Across America
Harry Potter, Stephen Curry, a unicorn, Mrs. Wilma the Lunch Lady, Z Yang an American Girl Doll and several other storybook characters were seen at Straughn Elementary School’s character parade in celebration of Reading Across America.
Parents lined the halls as the elementary students paraded through, showing off their costumes.
Each student got the chance to dress up as his or her favorite book character for the day.
“I really like to cook,” Breonna Robbins, who was dressed up as Mrs. Wilma the Lunch Lady, said. “I make really good cakes so I wanted to dress up as Mrs. Wilma.”
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading.
“I think reading is important because you won’t be able to learn any subject without learning how to read,” Ean Robbins, dressed as Stephen Curry, said. “It helps us get to higher grades if we know how to read well.”
SES has an Accelerated Reader contest where the top 100 readers get to go on a field trip.
“I like to read because I get to go on AR field trips, and because you get to learn new things,” Anasten Robbins, dressed as a unicorn, said.
Reading Across America was celebrated in all of the county schools this week, and will be celebrated at Andalusia Elementary School next week.
